Description: Recent cybersecurity incidents targeting Ukraine, Nigeria,  WHO, and other LMICs point to the immediate need to address the issue, particularly as the rollout of 5G and IoT approaches and the remote workforces grow under Covid-19 restrictions. Providing technical solutions such as software and firmware updates, endpoint and malware protection and improved authentication procedures only go so far: what is missing is understanding of how users in emerging markets understand and deal with privacy online. During this monthly meeting, DAI and Project Balance will discuss why cybersecurity for healthcare professionals is critical to the global digital health agenda by describing ongoing initiatives as well as examples of cases where projects have implemented cybersecurity measures to protect health data.

Speakers:

Ed Robinson

Cybersecurity Expert, Ed is a technology expert with over 25 years’ professional experience in ICT and 15 years’ experience working with teams on projects in LMIC, predominantly in the healthcare sector.  He is currently Technical Director at Project Balance where he designs technical interventions, provides technical support, mentoring, and training for various ICT4D projects in Africa and the Caribbean.  Previously, Ed spent 12 years at Futures Group / Palladium as the regional HMIS advisor across several international projects designing and implementing ICT4D solutions in online and occasionally-connected environments.  His professional career in ICT began in South Africa in the mid-1990s in the private sector but he has been avidly involved in computing since the days of the 8-bit CPU in the early 1980s.  A hacker for good, Ed spends much of his day designing and implementing secure ICT solutions, researching security trends, and mentoring partners on how to stay secure in an increasingly online world.

Julia Burchell

Senior Consultant, Partnerships & Insights DAI, brings over a decade of experience in digital for development, gender, and sustainability. With expertise in commercially-focused innovations that reach low-income and marginalized people, especially women, at scale, she currently leads the Partnerships and Insights team at DAI’s Centre for Digital Acceleration (CDA). Previously, she spent over nine years at the GSMA, most recently acting as the global lead on the GSMA National Dialogue initiative, which convenes mobile industry leaders and senior policymakers to identify how closer public-private collaboration at a national level can help progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals. She specialized in gender and mobile before leading research into mobile value-added services and industry partnerships. Julia has a strong background in corporate communications, having previously represented organizations across the telecommunications, utilities, accountancy, and law industries. She holds a first-class BA in English from the University of Nottingham and an MA in Writing from Goldsmiths University.

Bobby Jefferson

Chief Technology Officer (CTO), DAI Global Health, works on the USAID Cybersecurity for Critical Infrastructure in Ukraine Activity. He is a  member of the Global Forum on Cyber Expertise (GFCE) https://thegfce.org/. Bobby is  Board Director of  Cybersecurity and Digital Health startup companies and  Board Member,  Society for International Development (SID-W) Washington.
